Zlín factory complex

Zlín factory complex: The heart of Baťa industrialism

The factory complex in the centre of Zlín is a unique example of industrial architecture and a place reminiscent of the most celebrated era of the former Baťa works. The extensive complex of buildings, built in the 1920s and 1930s, became the heart of the shoemaking empire and a symbol of industrial progress. It was here that the original ‘factory in gardens’ concept was created, a vision that shaped the entire city of Zlín and inspired Baťa towns around the world.

The complex is dominated by buildings constructed to the standard Baťa-style structural module with a span of 6.15 x 6.15 metres (20 x 20 American feet), which became a hallmark of Zlín architecture. The factory buildings are arranged in regular parallel rows and numbered following the American method, making the complex easy to navigate.

Covering 65 hectares, the complex is one of the largest and most interesting brownfield sites in the Czech Republic. Some factory buildings still serve manufacturing purposes, while others have been restored and given new life. Here you will find stylish cafés, bistros, restaurants, small shops, galleries, loft apartments and other public services.

The most striking landmark is the iconic Building No. 21 – the Baťa skyscraper, once the second-tallest building in Central Europe equipped with a host of state-of-the-art technologies. Inside, you will find the unique lift office, high-speed lifts, a paternoster, an observation terrace and many other points of interest.

Venturing further into the complex, you will experience the atmosphere of an industrial ‘city within a city’. You will come across abandoned corners, old hydrants, stairways and rail tracks that evoke the period of the Baťa works’ greatest expansion.

Be sure to stop at Centre of Crafts 44, located in Building No. 44. In the local shoemaking workshop you can try your hand at traditional Baťa craftsmanship and create your own original leather product – a key ring, belt, hand-stitched notebook, elegant handbag or handmade shoes. However, advance booking is required for the workshop.

Although not all parts of the complex are freely accessible to the public, much of it can be explored on foot, offering many fascinating places to discover. If you would like to learn more about the history of the complex, we recommend the guided walk ZÓNA ZLÍN – Factory in the Gardens.
