In the Central Park in Jižní Svahy, a water biotope has been created that feels like a small oasis in the middle of Zlín’s largest housing estate. A pond with aquatic plants, a wooden jetty, bespoke street furniture and an observation footbridge form a space where it is easy to pause and enjoy quiet moments of nature watching or a short rest by the water’s edge.
The pond, with its aquatic and marginal vegetation, improves the microclimate in this densely populated part of the city, supports biodiversity and serves to retain rainwater. The natural water biotope, covering approximately 1,000 square metres, creates a habitat for small aquatic organisms and other wildlife that occur here naturally. It is supplied with rainwater from the roofs of surrounding buildings, which is collected in a retention tank and also used to irrigate nearby greenery and cool the surrounding area.
A striking feature of this site is a 40-metre-long steel observation footbridge, which spans a terrain cutting and offers unique views of the biotope and the surrounding landscape. In favourable conditions, you can see as far as the Chřiby Mountains from here, making it one of the most attractive viewpoints in the area.
The surroundings of the biotope naturally lend themselves to rest and relaxation. Low walls by the water’s edge and wooden loungers placed along the paths invite visitors to sit and relax. The wooden jetty adds another place to sit and enjoy a calm view of the water surface. Newly planted trees, shrubs, flower beds and extensive grassy areas create a welcoming environment for walks throughout the park.
Central Park, covering 11 hectares, is an ideal place for socialising, relaxation and sporting activities. You can play football, volleyball, foot tennis, tennis or basketball here. There is also a pétanque court, an outdoor gym and a disc golf course. For the youngest visitors, there are playgrounds, while older children can enjoy a play area with a rope pyramid and climbing wall. A cycle path also runs through the park, allowing you to head towards the city centre or in the direction of the nearby forests. Hiking enthusiasts can connect to local walking trails and set out to explore the surrounding countryside.
Central Park Jižní Svahy is a fine example of how public space can be revitalised and become a favourite place for both residents and visitors. It blends naturally into the surrounding development and brings new life to the area. When you are in Zlín, be sure to visit – this place will pleasantly surprise you.
